Lumbar apophyseal (facet) joint arthropathy is an important cause of low back pain and sciatica. Apophyseal joint arthrography sometimes shows "leakage" of contrast medium from the joint capsule. A histological explanation for this "leakage" at the lumbo-sacral apophyseal joint is suggested.
