Based on the Belongia et al paper from 1992 that I reviewed in part I of this series, there is, in fact, no controversy in the so-called tryptophan - eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (EMS) controversy. Contaminated batches of supplemental tryptophan were involved in the vast majority of EMS cases, which ceased to appear after the FDA banned all further sales of supplemental tryptophan. Therefore, the contaminant must have been the sole causative factor.
