The founder of chiropractic, D.D. Palmer, reported he had received the message of chiropractic from a deceased, intelligent spirit-being from the other world known to him as "Dr. Jim Atkinson."  As a result of Palmer's description, and his association with Spiritualism, modern sensationalist-style writers have labelled the profession ghost-based, metaphysical and bogus.  This stance ignores the fact that references to Atkinson form only a modicum of Palmer's writings and completely overlooks the positive aspects of the profession.  This paper argues that the lack of consideration given to the "historical context" of Palmer's writings by these detractors underlies the formulation of their criticisms.
