  Title Reduction of cholesterol in a patient with dyslipidemia undergoing chiropractic care: A case study and review of the literature

Abstract/Notes

Objective: To present the findings of a case in which a 63-year-old female experienced normalization of lipid panels following chiropractic care.

Clinical Features: A 63-year-old female presented with right hip and leg pain, head and neck aches, arthritis, and gout. She also had a history of high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Her baseline lipid panel indicated abnormal levels in each category: total cholesterol 287 mg/dL, LDL 199 mg/dL, HDL 33 mg/dL, and Triglycerides 273 mg/dL.

Intervention and Outcomes: Observation, orthopedic testing, static palpation, range of motion (ROM) evaluation, postural assessment, and x-ray of the cervical and lumbar spine were performed on the initial visit. She was adjusted with Diversified technique three times per week for six weeks, two times per week for eight weeks, and one time per week for 16 weeks. Reassessments were performed periodically, and the patient reported improvement in musculoskeletal symptoms. Ten weeks into care a second lipid panel was drawn revealing a normalization of all levels. Total cholesterol dropped to 147 mg/dL, LDL lowered to 84 mg/dL, HDL raised to 49 mg/dL, and triglycerides lowered to 68 mg/dL.

Conclusion: The clinical processes documented in this report suggest that Diversified chiropractic care may reduce stress on neural structures allowing a reduction in inflammatory processes that lead to atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. Further research on chiropractic care and risk factors for cardiovascular disease is warranted.
