Abstract/Notes

Hewn out of wilderness, Port Perry was barely more than a hamlet in D.D. Palmer’s time.  The first settlers were homesteaders and arrived well after Canada’s westward expansion.  For them, life was exceedingly difficult. In spite of two devastating fires in the town’s early history, Port Perry became a thriving mercantile and transportation center.  Its picturesque Lake Scugog was one of the most important economic assets, especially for shipping grain and timber.  The Port Perry of today, where the Palmer homestead is preserved, is also proud of its connection with the Founder of Chiropractic.
