Excerpt: the health insurance industry is changing—and for good reason. Insurers such as United Healthcare, Aetna, and WellPoint Inc., are all moving in the direction of disease prevention, a “wellness” model. These large companies are offering resources to assist their members in getting and staying well. WellPoint, parent company to 14 Blue Cross Blue Shield plans that insure approximately 34 million lives, has initiated several wellness-type programs. “360º Health,” an online wellness program, is part of a strategy to address preventive care, care coordination, and the development of an electronic medical record system. Health allow interaction between the member and provider to create a personal health record available to both with appropriate authorization.
