This article summarises a presentation given at the Australasian College of Chiropractors’ Research Summit entitled Strategic Research: Future Directions for Chiropractic Research in the 21st Century held on 6 November 2010 at Macquarie University in Sydney. ABSTRACT:
Evidence-based medicine and cultural authority—two buzzwords in today’s healthcare marketplace which provide both prestige and validity to chiropractic—can point to the establishment of Research Chairs as an indispensable catalyst to achieve these ends. This entails identifying in each institution of higher learning or public agency an individual whose purpose is to lead, develop and nurture a team of researchers with the goal of achieving a centre of excellence. It then becomes a matter of highest priority to allow such a centre’s activities to be adequately exposed in quality publications, conferences, and the media as well as degree programs. The primary responsibilities of an effective Research Chair include successfully establishing and maintaining (1) productive relations with funding sources, (2) collaborations, (3) advising and mentoring, (4) department administration, (5) strategic planning, (6) research design, (7) cultural authority, (8) service as an ambassador, and (9) the creation of a unified message.
