Purpose: To discern if leg length inequality as determined by accepted clinical methods represents an expression of fluctuating asymmetry.
Methods: Adult patients with lower back pain and leg length inequality as detected by X-Ray examination. The exam used a modified Friberg’s anteroposterior lumbopelvic view to identify whether leg length inequality is a function of fluctuating, directional or anti- asymmetry.
Results: Data collected indicated the leg length inequality was a manifestation of fluctuating asymmetry.
Conclusions: Evidence that leg length inequality is a manifestation of fluctuating asymmetry provides potential scientific rationale for clinical interventions aimed at establishing body symmetry i.e. braces, shoe orthotics heel lifts etc. Link to PDF version
