Abstract/Notes

Not so long ago, trainers who taped athletes’ ankles believed they were taking out pre-game “insurance.” The goal was compression, immobilization, or both. These days, kinesiology tape is used partly to give athletes a proprioceptive boost and partly to actually maintain range of motion and avoid compression.  Dr. Tom Michaud says that even a simple piece of kinesiology tape on the outside of an ankle pulls on the skin in a positive way. “The foot inverts,” he says. “It’s like adding an extra set of ‘ears’ to the body.”
