Objective: To report on the outcome of chiropractic care on a seven-and-a-half-monthold premature infant with an abnormal labyrinthine righting reflex.
Clinical Features: A premature seven-month-old infant was presented for chiropractic evaluation. He was found to have upper cervical dysfunction and demonstrated an abnormal labyrinthine righting reflex to the left.
Intervention and Outcome: The patient received upper-cervical chiropractic care. At the end of the first visit, he had no observable uppercervical dysfunction and demonstrated a normal labyrinthine righting reflex in all directions.
Conclusion: An abnormal labyrinthine righting reflex in an infant disappeared after manual therapy to the upper cervical spine region without any apparent adverse events or sequelae. Given the neurologic anatomy in this region, further research into a potential relationship between this reflex and manipulation of the upper cervical spine would be warranted.
