Abstract/Notes

Objective: To describe the care of two children suffering from constipation experiencing resolution following chiropractic care.

Clinical Features: Three-year-old male and female children were presented by their parents with a chief complaint of constipation. The boy had only one bowel movement per week since birth whereas the girl had experienced only one or two bowel movements per week prior to presentation. Despite raw fruits and vegetables in her daily diet and lots of water, the girl continued to suffer. The boy’s mother used to resort to using a rectal thermometer once a week to stimulate her son’s bowel movement as his pediatrician was of the opinion that no pathology existed. Examination revealed vertebral subluxations.

Intervention and Outcome: The patients were cared for with Diversified Technique characterized as high velocity, low amplitude thrusts, appropriate for the patients’ age and size.   The girl attended a total of 6 visits over a period of 6 weeks and the boy attended a total of 11 visits over a 2½ month period. Both had a resolution in their presenting complaint.

Conclusion: This case series provides supporting evidence on the effectiveness of chiropractic care in infants with constipation.
