Abstract/Notes

Twenty normal subjects were evaluated in a double-blind study by means of systolic blood pressure measurements and ultrasonic arterial velocity waveform analysis for alterations in sympathetic vasomotor activity in the lower extremity subsequent to chiropractic manipulation of the thoracolumbar junction. Systolic blood pressure at the ankle was found to elevate slightly (mean = 4.0 mm Hg 5 minutes postmanipulation (P<.01). The velocity waveform, below knee systolic pressure, and heart rate were essentially unaltered. Thoracolumbar spinal manipulation appears to induce a mild segmental somatosypathetic reflex with resultant vasoconstriction in the lower extremity vascular bed.
