Abstract/Notes

Objective:  To describe the positive health outcomes following chiropractic care of a child with adenotonsillar hypertrophy and associated sleep disordered breathing.

Clinical Features:  A two-year old female presented with sleep disordered breathing along with medically diagnosed hypertrophy of her adenoids and tonsils. She was prescribed Fluticasone steroid spray and a surgical consult.  The chiropractic examination revealed a subluxation at the atlas and right ilium.

Interventions and Outcomes:  The infant received chiropractic care utilizing Toggle Recoil and Activator Methods.  Within <2 weeks of care, the infant’s mother reported a 50% reduction in her presenting symptoms.  After 15 visits over a 12-week period, the patient attended a follow-up with her pediatrician.  There was no evidence of hypertrophy of adenoids/tonsils surgical intervention was not indicated.

Conclusion:  This case report provides supporting evidence that a child with adenotonsillar hypertrophy and sleep disordered breathing may benefit from chiropractic care.
