Abstract/Notes In 1991, futurist Alvin Toffler spoke of the impending demise of the medical monopoly as a result of the knowledge explosion (1). At the same time, trends analysts such as Gerald Celente were speaking of public's disillusionment with traditional symptom relief medicine and the trend toward the use of more alternative and complimentary approaches to health care (2). Then in 1992, David Eisenberg, MD of Harvard's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, had his watershed article published in the New England Journal of Medicine, entitled "Unconventional Medicine in the United States." (3) The article revealed that the use of alternative and complementary therapies was far higher than anyone in the medical establishment had previously though. But, what it really demonstrated was a paradigm shift in the public's thinking about health care and a growing thirst for more natural approaches to prevention and treatment, something that is continuing to grow and is projected to be a major trend in the next millennium (4-6). A good example of how this trend is progressing can be seen from a recent survey conducted by International Communications Research for Prevention Magazine. The survey revealed that 75% of Americans want drug-free pain relief (7).
