Abstract/Notes

Abstract: Drs. E.J. Whipple and G.W. Johnson are acknowledged in chiropractic history as the first chiropractors known to have been arrested for the practice of osteopathy or medicine without a license. Although his defense was unsuccessful, E.J. Whipple's trial helped set the stage for the landmark 1907 trial, Wisconsin v. Morikubo, the first successful defense of a chiropractor accused of practicing osteopathy and medicine without a license. It was previously reported that Drs. Whipple and Johnson fled Wisconsin and further legal trouble following their trial; however, there is much more to the story of E.J. Whipple and the events following his trial. The focus of this paper if to give more breadth and depth to the story of the life of E.J. Whipple.
