Objective: To discuss management of cervical spine instability and disc extrusions using Nonsurgical spinal decompression (NSD) combined with other conservative therapies.
Clinical Features: A 50-year-old male sought chiropractic care for persistent neck pain with unilateral radicular shoulder pain and sensory paresthesia of left hand. These symptoms interfered with daily activities and disturbed his sleep. The previous MRI of the patient indicated disc extrusion together with cephalic migration of disc material.
Intervention and Outcome: Treatment consisted of NSD combined with conventional chiropractic care for 30+ visits over three months. The patient reported marked improvement in the intensity and frequency of neck pain, radicular pain and paresthesia after the treatment period. The MRI following treatment at four months revealed considerable reduction in disc extrusion which continued to decrease after a year post-intervention.
Conclusion: The findings of this study demonstrate improvement in function and reduced pain intensity without any side-effects, indicating safety and potential effectiveness of NSD combined with other conservative therapies for cervical segmental instability and disc extrusion. Further investigation of NSD compared to other rehabilitative modalities and long-term effectiveness as a non-invasive treatment option for cervical spine disorders is warranted.
