Objective: To highlight findings in a cadaveric case of muscular dystrophy (MD) and to discuss possible treatments, complementary alternative modalities, available to help the quality of life for patients with muscular dystrophy or similar neuromuscular disorders.
Methods: Pertinent findings noted during dissection of a cadaver with muscular dystrophy for a gross anatomy course at a chiropractic college are documented. These findings suggested specific therapeutic approaches to patients with MD. In addition, a short review in the literature of possible complementary or alternative treatment modalities for MD was performed to see if such treatments are beneficial in patients with muscular dystrophy.
Results: Several of the muscles of the cadaver with muscular dystrophy (MD) showed significant atrophy with marked fatty replacement. Also, the heart in this case was enlarged with some fatty change, and there was placement of a left ventricular assist device (LVAD). The major blood vessels (descending aorta and inferior vena cava) were narrower in diameter than usual and did not show any evidence of atherosclerosis. The pancreas was small and shrunken, consistent with what is found in those patients with diabetes mellitus. The psoas minor muscle, which is either very insignificant or absent in most individuals, was enlarged in comparison to the markedly fatty replaced psoas major muscle. Regarding possible treatment per one of the articles in the literature review of patients with muscular dystrophy or other types of neuromuscular disease, the patient received relief via chiropractic care. Another paper suggested that massage therapy may be a good approach for patients with a neuromuscular disease.
Conclusion: Pathological findings in MD include not only fatty replacement and atrophy of certain muscles, but also involvement of cardiovascular and genitourinary systems. Concerning treatment options for those with MD, chiropractic treatment can be considered a complementary therapy to assist in pain management and to help increase mobility. Quality of life for patients with MD or other similar neuromuscular disorders can be improved by using a multidisciplinary approach, involving chiropractors, physical therapists, and neurologists.
