Objective: To review the American Public Health Association (APHA) policy statement database for policies relevant to the chiropractic profession.
Methods: Investigators conducted a review of APHA policy statements adopted between 2005-2023 that were active with full-text availability. Three investigators established a rating system through consensus to assess which policies were relevant to chiropractic clinical practice, academia, and/or advocacy groups. The rating system was iteratively tested for inter-rater reliability and refined until 75% consensus was achieved. A second phase of the study was then performed by 4 investigators consisting of evaluating the congruence of selected policies with the American Chiropractic Association definition of chiropractic care as well as with 2 or more public health competencies for chiropractors previously established.
Results: Seventy-nine APHA policy statements (31%) were found to include at least 1 action step directly related to the chiropractic profession. Of these policies, 76 (96%) addressed 2 or more established public health competencies for chiropractors.
Conclusion: Numerous policy statements adopted by the APHA are directly relevant to the chiropractic profession. Further research is needed to investigate the role chiropractors can play in the execution of policy action steps.
