Abstract/Notes With increasing emphasis on evidence-based health care, there is increasing onus on clinicians to read, appraise and understand research papers and to be able to apply findings to clinical practice in order to improve patient care. This puts increased emphasis on the ability to understand statistics, a skill that has often atrophied or never fully been mastered.

This article is the first in an occasional series explaining how to interpret statistics in clinical research. It puts research into a clinical context, highlighting the importance of peer-reviewed enquiry in developing clinical standards.
