Abstract/Notes Health benefits beyond increased joint movement have often been claimed for chiropractic adjustments. Here, evidence is presented that muscle stretch, as a consequence of chiropractic adjustments, could promote the maintenance, repair and growth of nerve and muscle.

Time-force analyses show that most chiropractic adjustments are characterised by a high velocity thrust followed by a period of maintained force. This is likely to result in an initial passive stretch of muscle around the joint followed by a longer eccentric stretch. Recently, we found that eccentric muscle stretch is a powerful stimulus for production of a novel splice variant of insulin-like growth factor-1 called MGF that promotes the growth, repair and survival of both nerve and muscle. Eccentric muscle stretch as a result of the chiropractic adjustment could therefore upregulate MGF resulting in local myotrophic and neurotrophic effects.
