| Objective: This paper presents a discussion concerning an element of the chiropractic model. It follows the second link of the Somatosensory-Autonomic-Visceral chain (the SAV Triad) and its integration with manipulative aspects of the manual health sciences. Design: It is a cursory overview of the published literature from the four main professions with interest in the topic. Method: A search of reference lists from electronic and printed sources was conducted and relevant citations extracted. Presentation: The format of presentation essentially denotes the large volume of papers, their professional association, evidential level, as well as variety of topics or conditions addressed. Historical and international features are appended. Conclusion: In the absence of evidence to the contrary, there appears to be extensive if not overwhelming evidence as to the potential for a manual model for positively influencing the autonomic nervous system and through that, internal pathophysiology and symptoms. There does however appear to be a need for further research, both into the neurophysiology of the complex spine-related mechanisms involved, and clinical studies to assess areas of limitations and efficacy.
