Abstract/Notes

The chiropractic care of the pregnant woman requires special considerations.  When a pregnant patient presents with an autoimmune disorder such as SLE, the clinical complexity of the case becomes, in some respects, elevated. A recent case report describing internal carotid artery dissection following chiropractic treatment in a pregnant woman with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus requires further considerations not addressed in the case reported. We examine the patient’s pre-existing conditions of pregnancy, migraine headaches and systemic lupus erythematosus as risk factors for stroke. The argument is made that is coherent with a recent population-based case-control and case-crossover study that found the increased risks of vertebrobasilar artery (VBA) stroke associated with chiropractic care and visits to primary care physicians were more likely due to patients with headache and neck pain from VBA dissection seeking care prior to their stroke.
