This paper relates an authoritative account of the foundation of the Sydney College of Osteopathy (S.C.O.) by Alfred Kaufmann in 1959 and his contribution to chiropractic and osteopathic education in Australia.  The authors have included Alfred's family and early life, world travels, his religious calling and his eventual return to natural therapies.

It was not until he was 55 years of age that Kaufmann turned his attention, through the urging of his patients, to the teaching of Osteopathy and Chiropractic in Australia.  His challenge to mount a successful teaching institution for dedicated students, providing a solid education in the basic sciences and training of manual adjustments in the health care field, appealed to his desire to promulgate the knowledge that he had accumulated during his studies in England and the United State of America.

Following Kaufmann's retirement, the College, through a number of name changes, would come to play an integral role in the drive for legislation and recognition of the chiropractic and osteopathic professions in Australia.  The Syndey College of Chiropractic (S.C.C.) emerged in 1990 to establish a world first amalgamation of a private chiropractic college with a public funded university.
