Abstract/Notes

Objective: To report on the functional improvement and the reduction of pain in an adult male diagnosed with fibromyalgia undergoing chiropractic care.

Clinical Features: A 56-year-old male presented for chiropractic care with the chief complaint of low back pain and neck pain. He also presented with complaints of migraines, paresthesia in upper and lower extremities, chronic fatigue, constipation, diarrhea and asthma. The patient was diagnosed with fibromyalgia as well as chronic fatigue syndrome, diabetes and IBS. The patient sought chiropractic care after he experienced no relief from other therapies and pharmacological management. He used a cane to ambulate.

Intervention and Outcomes: Torque Release Technique (TRT) and Activator protocol was utilized for both the evaluation and application of the patient’s chiropractic care. The patient experienced reduction in pain, increased range of motion, mobility and functional improvements. He no longer needed a cane to ambulate.

Conclusion: This paper describes improvement of function, mobility and decrease in pain in an adult male with fibromyalgia related symptoms that presented for chiropractic care. The findings presented in this case study suggest chiropractic adjustments may benefit patients who suffer from fibromyalgia syndrome. More research is warranted to further understand the benefits of chiropractic care on those who suffer with fibromyalgia.

Key Words: fibromyalgia, chiropractic, Torque Release Technique, Activator Technique, adjustments, subluxation, spinal manipulation
