Resolution of Symptoms Following Chiropractic in a Woman Suffering From Ulcerative Colitis: A Case Study

Objective: To report on the positive health outcomes following chiropractic in a 48-year-old female suffering from ulcerative colitis.

Clinical Features: The patient presented with a diagnosis of ulcerative colitis from her gastroenterologist. She experienced episodes of loss of appetite, bloody stool, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and a loss of 13 lbs. over the course of a two-month period. No previous intervention had been utilized when she came into the chiropractor’s office. Patient denied past history of trauma or treatment to the gastrointestinal (GI) system prior to this initial visit

Intervention and Outcomes: The patient was seen on average three times a week for ten weeks. Management included evaluation of the spine for subluxations and adjustments using a full spine high-velocity low-amplitude (HVLA) thrust to the involved areas. Care resulted in reduction in symptomatology

Conclusion: The results of this case study show positive health outcomes in a woman suffering from ulcerative colitis. Further studies are suggested to examine the role of chiropractic in the conservative treatment of patients with ulcerative colitis.
