Abstract/Notes

Objective:  To describe the positive health outcomes and improved quality of life following chiropractic care in a 17-year-old male with autism.

Clinical Features:  A 17-year-old male presents for chiropractic care with autism, altered behavioral patterns, language deficits, sleeping problems, constipation, and earaches.

Intervention and Outcomes:  Over a 24-month period specific chiropractic care to reduce vertebral subluxation was administered to the patient.  Both the Activator Method Chiropractic Technique and the Torque Release Technique protocol were utilized in this case.  The patient responded favorably to chiropractic care with patient demonstrating a decrease in frequency of earaches, normalized sleep patterns, improved language development, behavioral patterns, and digestion.  

Conclusion:  The improvement in autism related signs and symptoms are described in this case. Other studies have previously been conducted showing similar outcomes.  More research is recommended to further explore the role of chiropractic in this population.
